There are so many benefits to taking a dance class. It’s an excellent way to get your sweat on. Dancing makes you forget you are doing cardio (that’s pretty magical — am I right??). It can boost your mood, reduce anxiety and lower your stress levels (if you are in the right level class 😅). It’s great for improving strength, endurance, coordination, memory, balance, flexibility, etc. The list goes on.
But what makes a heels class different? It’s just a dance class in a high-heeled shoe, right?
Nope. It’s so much more than that.
You are going to get more out of it than you knew you needed.
I’ve been taking heels classes for over 8 years now, and as a student who’s been in spaces all over the country, I’ve noticed similar themes in all the classes I’ve taken. It was what I was seeing happen in these rooms that pushed me to become a teacher.
I’ve been teaching heels dance for over 4 years now and as a teacher, I’ve narrowed down what I want all my classes to consist of. I try my best to make sure that everyone who enters my class will receive these four empowering takeaways:
1. A Connection To Your Body
I’ve always found Heels Dance to be an intimate art form. It’s quite personal. We are given the chance to move and connect to our body in ways we might not have before and everyone experiences it differently. Movements are made to enhance our body’s natural curves and lines like a work of art. We play with showing off parts of our body that we have been used to hiding. Other moves require us to touch ourselves on the thighs, legs, neck, hair and sometimes the booty. This self-touch is meant to deepen your connection and promote a natural exploration of your body.
I’ve seen so many women build their confidence back up through heels dance. They slowly mend their relationship with their bodies.
Heels dance has allowed me to connect with me body in a way I had shut myself off to — Kaelyn
2. The Rediscovery of Your Sensuality
Sensuality is the ability to experience pleasure through our senses. In movement, it can be smooth, slow, mysterious, seductive and mesmerizing. The moves we perform in heels are meant to encourage women to connect to our inherent sensuality and feel powerful. Sensuality is a natural feminine expression that, for ages, women have been told is bad. Heels dance will help us rediscover that sensuality that we’ve been told to hide away.

3. The Permission To Take Up Space
As women, we are accustomed to playing small and taking up as little space as we can. We are taught to be quiet, modest, polite, good-girls. We’ve been told to believe that being too wild, loud or sexual is dangerous. Well, I for one have had enough of that. We need more rooms where women can take up space. I hold space for every woman who comes to my class to take up as much space as needed. No one plays small in my class. I challenge my students to be bigger, bolder and more dangerous.
To have an hour every week where I get to learn, work on myself, and push myself has been so special — Shalu
4. Support From The Community
If you’ve always wanted a personal little cheer squad, you will certainly get one after attending a heels class. The students are so welcoming and supportive. These are spaces where you can show up as you are, and be vulnerable with the group, without judgment. It’s a space where strangers will cheer you on as if they are your best friend. Deep bonds are made in these classes. I’ve seen total strangers become great friends after weeks of attending my classes. There is so much love and mutual respect in these spaces.
It brought me an incredible commuinty of empowering and supportive people — Julia
I truly love being a heels teacher. To get to help change the lives of women through weekly dance classes is an honour that I will never take for granted. I care about this work deeply and I feel it is my life’s purpose to empower women through movement. I get to see women grow through dance and develop a deeper love for themselves. And as a teacher, that is the most rewarding thing.
